Panthers Make a Statement with Dominance, But There's Work to Be Done
Carolina dominated every phase of the game, including the penalties! Efficient passing, cunning defense, and risk taking were on display against the Atlanta Falcons with a final score of 34-3. Bryce Young threw another three touchdowns, Darren Waller scored twice, and the defense smothered Atlanta’s QB carousel.
The Good
Linebacker Devin Lloyd became the first linebacker in league history to post 8+ tackles, 2 interceptions, an interception TD, and a sack in a single game. The Panthers defense as a whole forced five turnovers, with sacks from Jaelan Phillips and Bobby Okereke, finally giving fans a real glimpse of the franchise’s defensive investment coming to fruition.
Most fans don’t realize Lloyd wasn’t a blue‑chip prospect. He was a three‑star recruit whose only offer came from Utah, meaning he entered college with no major program backing. He’s one of the rare modern linebackers who built his career on adaptability, intelligence, and persistence rather than pedigree.
Bryce Young and this offense continue to be stellar! Young, in just two games, sits with 648 passing yards, 6 TDs, and a 113% passer rating so far this season. The usual suspects were in attendance, and their numbers were accounted for. Wide receiver Tetairoa finally made some noise with his first 100-yard game of the season. Xavier finally made the big play and showed that he has been working on his hands by no longer catching with his body.
But the star of Sunday’s show was tight end Darren Waller, who was acquired by Carolina right before the regular season kicked off. Waller reminded the league of who he was by going for two TDs.
This offense is jelling like never before, and the real question is: who do we have to “thank” for that? The playcalling has been night and day compared to last season, and I’ll leave it at that.
The Bad and Ugly
Carolina finished Sunday’s game against the Falcons with 9 penalties for 63 yards and was flagged a total of 10 times. In Week 1 against the Bears, Carolina was flagged 11 times, committing 11 penalties for 84 yards. That’s 21 penalties in two weeks, and while the Panthers are fortunate these mistakes haven’t completely buried them yet, this is still a glaring problem that needs to be addressed immediately. Penalties don’t just stall drives; they erase explosive plays, extend opponents’ possessions, and force a team to beat both the opponent and its own self‑inflicted wounds. It’s counterproductive football, and eventually it costs more than anyone is willing to lose.
