Is There Such Thing as an 'Ugly' Win? Analysis: Panthers Take Care of the Eagles

The Carolina Panthers returned from their bye week with a victory that was far from pretty, but a win is a win. Carolina never surrendered its lead and ultimately secured a needed win with a 25-14 victory over the Eagles.

One of the key reasons behind Carolina’s 25-14 victory over Philadelphia was the Panthers' dominance on the ground. While the rushing attack was not the prettiest and featured few big plays beyond Hubbard’s breakout run, it was effective enough to keep the offense on schedule. Even as the passing game struggled to find a steady rhythm, Carolina consistently moved the ball with its rushing attack. Chuba Hubbard led the way with 120 yards on 28 carries, but his impact extended beyond the stat sheet. His heavy workload helped sustain long drives, control the tempo, and keep the Eagles' defense on the field. As a result, the Panthers outgained Philadelphia 399-222 in total yards and held a decisive edge in time of possession.

That balance also took pressure off Bryce Young, who threw for 281 yards and two touchdowns despite completing only 20 of 39 passes. Rather than relying on explosive passing plays, Carolina repeatedly moved the chains and forced Philadelphia to defend for longer stretches, wearing down the adversary and creating opportunities late in the game.

Another overlooked turning point was Carolina’s response after Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith’s fourth-quarter touchdown brought Philadelphia within five points. With the game potentially shifting in the Eagles favor, the Panthers defense forced the situation back in their direction, and a blocked punt created the opportunity for Young to connect with Tommy Tremble (TE) for a 19-yard touchdown. The special-teams play was crucial because it turned a tense finish into a two-score lead, allowing Carolina to regain control rather than risk another Eagles scoring drive.

Tremble’s second touchdown of the afternoon highlighted the importance of having reliable options beyond the Panthers' primary receiving threats, while the defense’s ability to deliver in a critical moment helped seal the victory. Carolina still committed 13 penalties for 149 yards, a costly issue that kept Philadelphia competitive, but the Panthers overcame those mistakes by winning the battles that mattered most: rushing production, field position, and execution when the game was on the line.

Next up are the 1-5 Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Baker Mayfield’s return for Week 7 is still uncertain, though there seems to be optimism amongst the Buccaneers that Mayfield could make his return this week against the Panthers. And why wouldn’t he? Baker, the ever-angry man-child, seems to have made Carolina the convenient scapegoat for every disappointment he’s faced in the NFL. Pride has a way of clouding self-awareness, and as the saying goes, "pride goeth before destruction.”
