Charlotte FC Complete One of The Most Important Signings in MLS History: Calvin Stengs

Charlotte FC are set to complete the signing of 25 year-old attacker, Calvin Stengs, from Eredivisie side Feyenoord. The deal, once confirmed, represents a massive step forward for both Charlotte FC and the MLS as a whole. The opportunity to sign a young talent–with both experience and potential–just ahead of his prime is something rarely seen in the MLS. After the transfer is agreed to, it is expected that the player will sign a four year contract with the club.

For Charlotte FC, they appear to have found their new central attacking midfielder, their new number ten. Stengs has historically played both winger and attacking midfielder, but he is expected to become Charlotte’s star attacking midfielder. For Stengs, this represents an incredible opportunity to lead a young MLS side with his incredible talents and creativity; if the young talent is eyeing a return to Europe at some point, becoming the cornerstone of Charlotte FC’s attack will certainly help. 

This past season, in the Dutch Eredivisie, Calvin Stengs recorded 29 appearances–with 26 starts–and bagged 8 goals along with 12 assists. Additionally, the 25-year-old has earned eight caps for the Netherlands national team. In his first international appearance–back in 2019–Stengs recorded two assists in a win over Estonia. As of late, Calvin Stengs recently recorded a hat trick in the Euro 2024 qualifiers versus Gibraltar. 

Calvin Stengs’ resume is certainly impressive. The attacker is an out-and-out starter in one of the top leagues in the world. He continues to receive all-important international team call-ups and will expect more in the future. So, all of this begs the question: why Charlotte FC? For a player with this pedigree and unlimited potential, why would he agree to move to the MLS?

This question remains–somewhat–to be answered. However, Charlotte FC and the MLS will provide him with an opportunity to lead a team at a young age, showcasing everything that he has to offer. It would not surprise me if Stengs considers a return to Europe in the coming years, especially if he has success as expected. 

In the meantime, Charlotte FC will complete one of the most important signings in MLS history while simultaneously advancing the club’s playoff and title hopes.
